JAMMU, Mar 1:

Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today lashed out at the National Conference alleging that the ruling party doesn’t believe in strengthening the democratic set up in the state.

“National Conference does not believe in grooming the mainstream opposition… They want opposition from outside mainstream; the opposition should be in the form of secessionism, separatism…. And to strengthen the separatists, the people are being oppressed by the ruling party.

Addressing media persons after PDP legislators staged a walkout in protest against the denial of allowing an adjournment motion on Kashmir’s prevailing situation by Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone, Mehbooba Mufti said that state government is not displaying flexible attitude to discuss various burning issues concerning people of the state on the floor of the House.

“If opposition parties are not offered a democratic space then where do they express their voice ? …. PDP under Rule-56 of the J&K Constitution sought adjournment motion but the Speaker did not allow us for the discussion on prevailing situation in Kashmir…. This is our democratic right but we are being denied of it. The government has made mockery of the democracy” Mehbooba said

PDP president said that such avoidance of the important discussions on the floor of the House sometimes lead to violent outbursts on roads.

“The people after seeing that their elected representatives are not allowed to raise issues related to them on the floor of the House due to suppressive tactics of the ruling party get agitated and probably this is the reason they resort to stone pelting and violence.” PDP leader said

“ The only blot on the face of Indian democracy is that the NC has a nexus with those powers who have allowed them to openly resort to goondaism right from 1947 till now.” she added

Referring to the situation prevailing in Kashmir, the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said that the two-year tenure of Omar-led coalition government has converted “There is complete chaos and mis-governance in the state but instead of taking appropriate measures to bring the situation on track, the National Conference led coalition government has unleashed a reign of terror in Valley,’’ Mufti told reporters

“Youth in Kashmir are continuously being harassed and they are on run due to fear psychosis,’’ Mehbooba said and added that about 2500 innocent youths have been detained in Kashmir for stone pelting.

PDP chief further said that Omar led government has not only ruined the Kashmir valley with its wrong policies but has also turned Jammu as the safe haven for the criminals and goons.

“We are proud of Jammu, which is famous as ‘City of Temples, but of late criminals are moving freely in Jammu city because of political patronage but there is no check over it,’’ Mehbooba added.

The Peoples Democratic Party President, Mehbooba Mufti Tuesday alleged that when it comes to Jammu and Kashmir, even the media begins to work as part and parcel of the security establishment.
Addressing the reporters outside the Assembly, she demanded the media should be allowed to function independently and show the truth as elsewhere in the country.
“I appreciate the media of the country for highlighting corruption or Human Rights cases. But when it comes to Jammu and Kashmir, they become part and parcel of the security establishment. Allow media to show the truth on Jammu and Kashmir as is being done in rest of the country,” Mehbooba said.
Alleging manipulation of the media at the hands of the establishment, she said when NC says something sensitive it is played down by the press but when PDP does the same thing it is blown out of proportion.
