Govt to tackle unemployment on priority basis | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 2:-The National Conference led coalition Government has decided to tackle the problem of unemployment on a priority basis as the number of unemployed youth registered with employment exchanges in the state has touched 5.96 lakhs. Official sources said that the increase has raised concern among the Government functionaries. Dring the last two years 26866 candidates have been selected for various posts. In addition to this 43,000 youths were engaged as casual workers and 8,000 as volunteers under the National Youth Corpus. Sources said that though the state Government had launched an ambitious employment policy, the problem has not been solved to a great extent because scope of jobs in Government departments and public sector undertakings was very limited. According to sources, almost all public sector undertakings were overstaffed and the staff strength had crossed the saturation point leaving no room for further jobs. One of the reasons for public sector Corporation having remained in the red for all these decades is overstaffing. Reports said that the state Government in general and Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, in particular have been trying to persuade the Government of India in opening doors of central Government offices and that of central public sector corporations for the youth from Jammu and Kashmir. Already the state Government has conveyed to the centre the need for reservation in jobs in the Armed Forces for the youth in the Jammu and Kashmir. Reports said that when Mufti Mohd Sayeed was the Chief Minister he had succeeded in getting over 7,000 people belonging to Jammu and Kashmir jobs in the Army and the paramilitary forces. The reports said that though the state Government had made room for helping the unemployed youth from Jammu and Kashmir to explore overseas job avenues, the Government agencies have hardly taken any major initiative on the project. Reports said that in case the Government was unable to provide jobs for at least one lakh youths within next one year the figure of unemployed youth in the state could exceed seven lakhs.
