Police Games begin amidst continued rains | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, March 02: The continued rains lashing over the city hardly had its impact on the grand opening of the 59th All India Police Games (Wrestling Cluster) at the well decorated Gulshan Ground, here today. Undeterred by the rains, contingents from different participating states held their heads high while taking part in the march past and oath taking ceremony this evening. The five-day mega event, in five disciplines of indoor games, was declared open by Minister for Sports, R S Chib, who was chief guest in the inaugural function. In his address to the participating teams, Minister was all praise for the organizers, J&K Police. He lauded the efforts of J&K Police in promoting sports in a big way. Minister had special mention about achievements of Police in sports at the national and international level. Earlier, chairman of the organizing committee, Director General of J&K Police, Kuldeep Khoda welcomed the distinguished gathering and presented a brief note of the Games.
Walkover by host in boxing
Hosts Jammu and Kashmir made a poor beginning after the first boxing bout ended in walkover. Boxer, Zahid Beig, who got his hand injured during coaching sessions earlier during the camp, could not get the clearance of the doctor concerned resulting into a walkover. Zahid was to compete in 69 kg welter weight but could not report the boxing ring, subsequently walkover was awarded to Tiatenjen of Nagaland Police. A number of first round bouts took place in other weight groups also. Earlier, the boxing competition was declared open by the Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda at Gymnasium Hall of the University of Jammu.
