“Declare ‘national basmati mission’ in Jammu” | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 2: The growers of world famous Basmati rice in R S Pura on Wednesday urged the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh to positively declare ‘National Basmati Mission’ saying it will benefit over 2.5 lakh farmers’ families in Jammu province and it will change the agricultural scenario of Jammu and Kashmir. “We would like to draw the attention of the prime minister towards basmati farmers of Jammu province. There is no marketing facility for them and the farmers have been facing problems in selling their produce. We urge the prime minister to declare national basmati mission for Jammu basmati rice farmers in his upcoming visit,” Choudhary Dev Raj, president R S Pura Rice Growers Association told reporters here. Dev Raj also demanded setting up of crop ‘Mandis’ at district and block level so that the farmers don’t face any difficulty in selling their produce. He regretted that “lack of awareness” among farmers about various centrally sponsored schemes has been affected the farming community dversely and demanded the agriculture department should take vigorous measures to make farmers about these schemes. The crop of Basmati rice is being grown on 35,000 hectares of land in Jammu province. “The Basmati growers, who were given Kissan Credit Cards, have not benefited so far. Besides there is no awareness among the farmers about crop insurance which is adversely affecting the community. We generally get a meager amount of Rs 200 per kanal or so in form of insurance claim while our cost stands Rs 3000 per kanal,” general secretary of the association, Tejinder Singh Wazir said. The representatives, however, expressed gratitude towards the present government for sanctioning funds for agriculture and allied sectors under various schemes.
