‘Irrigation department fails to redress farmer’s problems’ | 'Farmers farming without water’ | | Early Times Report Jammu, March 2: Tall claims of the irrigation department to provide each irrigation facility to the farmer fraternity holds baseless as most of the canals, which are the basic source of irrigation water are in shambles. This condition of the canals speaks volumes about the negligent approach of the department. Notably almost all the canals of the Jammu region are in bad shape due to the presence of waste, garbage and other waste material including the seasonal grass. These canals have become the garbage dumping grounds as a result of which the farmers have to suffer due to delayed irrigation facility. It is pertinent to mention here that the irrigation department had made policies and also provide funds to the modernization of the rivers, canals and other water resources which are helpful in irrigation to the farmers. As the Baisakhi festival is nearing, as per the norms of the irrigation department all the major and minor rivers should be maintained and renovated but still no concrete step has been taken by the concerned department. Dwarka Nath a farmer of R. S Pura area said that we are totally dependent upon the irrigation department for the water supply as at this time the crop needs plenty of water for growth but due to scarcity of the irrigation facility our crops are dying a slow death.
It is pertinent to mention here that nearly half of the 140 tubewells installed by the government in R.S Pura, Bishnah and Suchetgarh for irrigation purpose in recent years are non-functional due to poor maintenance and erratic power supply. However officials from the Irrigation Department say that they are supplying enough water and even specials teams have been created by the department to keep a track of the infrastructure created to supply water to the farmers particularly in those areas which are deprived of canal irrigation facility. At present the tube wells irrigate nearly 8000 kanals of crop land in the Jammu region particularly in rice producing area of R.S. Pura, Suchetgarh, Akhnoor, Bishnah and other areas.
