Minor girl dies; toll in Pulwama mosque blast rises to six
11/12/2006 11:07:19 PM

SRINAGAR, NOV 12
A six-year-old girl, who was among nearly 50 persons injured in a grenade attack on a mosque in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, succumbed after battling for life for two days, raising the death toll in the incident to six, officials said today.
Shazia, who had suffered multiple splinter injuries in the attack at Tahab mosque minutes before the Friday prayers, died at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences at Soura last evening, they said.
Three other members of her family - Nisar Ahmad (23), Sheeraza Jan (16) and Umar Maqbool (13) - have already died due to the explosion and Shazia is the fourth to succumb.
Shazia was hit by several splinters all over her body, rendering her lifeless. Shazia's lower limbs were badly hurt and her cheat and lower abdomen bore the marks of several splinters that pierced through her skin. One of the splinters had hit Shazia in the face near her left eye and the area had swollen, forcing the closure of the eye.
Five persons, including three girls, were earlier killed in the grenade explosion aimed at leader of the Barelvi sect of Muslims, Maulana Abdul Rashid Dawoodi, who was among the injured.
The youth accused of lobbing the grenade was arrested and he claimed the grenade was given to him by Hizbul Mujahideen militants to target Dawoodi and paid Rs 1,000 for it.
However, Hizbul Mujahideen condemned the grenade attack on the mosque and said it does not believe in killing innocent civilians.
Meanwhile, a youth Hilal Ahmad Rangrez, who was critically injured while fleeing a police raid on a house in Khanyar locality of downtown Srinagar on November 5, breathed his last at Soura medical institute this morning, the sources said.
Rangrez had allegedly jumped from the third floor of the house to evade arrest. Police raided the premises on tip-offthat it had become a gambling den, the officials said.
The kith and kin of the deceased accused police of killing Rangrez. They alleged that he was thrown down by cops when he resisted arrest as there was no gabling going on in the house, and sought intervention of senior police officers to probe the incident.
