Bhatti's murder, extremist ideology & Kashmiri leadership

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 3: Extremists in Pakistan have once again struck and murdered Pakistan's Minority Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti. He was a Christian. He was murdered in cold-blood yesterday by Taliban militants as he drove out of mother's house in Islamabad. Earlier on January 4, the extremists had murdered Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer. He had been murdered by one his own security guards. Both of them were liquidated because they stood for modernization and liberal values as well as an all-inclusive ideology.
The gruesome murder of Bhatti and Taseer, belonging to President Asf Ali Zardari's Pakistan People's Party (PPP), must make the Kashmiri leadership sit up and discuss and decide if what it has been doing since decades is what an overwhelming majority of the people in Kashmir wants. It must do so for various reasons. One of the reasons is that Pakistan has failed as a state, notwithstanding the fact that it was created on the basis of religion. Pakistan has failed because it has all along remained in the hands of those who see in a democratic set-up their own downfall and destruction. It has been the Army and the dreaded Inter-Service Intelligence and their men in the political establishment who have ruled the roost for most of all these years of Pakistan's creation. They are ruling even today, with the likes of President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani have no other option but to dance to their tunes. They are not just ruling the country. They are also raising battalions and battalions of Taliban-type extremists and using them against those who wish to see Pakistan as a democratic polity where the people have an effective say in the governance and where they exercise civil and political rights, including the right to free speech and assembly.
It's no wonder then that there is chaos and anarchy across the country. There exists no institution worth its name in Pakistan. It's a civil war-like situation in the entire country. The Muslims are killing, butchering and maiming the Muslims. The Sunnis are attacking the Shiite Muslims and the vice-versa. Mohajirs are up in arms. Ahmediyas are up in revolt. Minorities are being crushed. Women are being discriminated against. Common people are being treated like the slaves are treated. Bomb blasts, fidayeen attacks, use of air power, murder and mayhem have become the order of the day across Pakistan. All the four Pakistani provinces are up in arms against each other. Sections of population are migrating to somewhat safer places and it has been happening at regular intervals. The past four years or so have witnessed umpteen terrorist attacks leading to the death of thousands of civilians. Those who dare to speak against misrule, murder of democracy, Army, ISI and extremists are being brutally liquidated. It's fear and despondency everywhere in Pakistan, where the Army, the ISI and the Taliban extremists working in complete unison. The extremists are enacting their inhuman acts under the very nose of the authorities and are being allowed to go scot-free. The fact of the matter is that Pakistan is not only a failed state but is also recognized across the globe as a rogue state. It has become the epi-center of global terrorism and it has been posing a grave danger to world peace. No one trusts Pakistan. In fact, most of the civilized and democratic countries in the world hate and abhor what has been happening in Pakistan and what the Army-controlled Islamabad has been doing.
It's paradoxical that there are elements in Kashmir who derive inspiration from Pakistan and extremist ideologies and indulge in activities similar to the ones being taken recourse to by the extremists in Pakistan whose single-point agenda is to Talibanize everything and deprive the common people of their general civil and political rights. It's time for the Kashmiri leadership to take cognizance of what has been happening in Pakistan and similar other countries in the Muslim world and refashion its whole approach. In fact, it's time for the Kashmiri leadership to introspect taking into consideration the fact that its extremist ideology has brought nothing but death, destruction and miseries.
Religion is a private affair and it should be treated as such. States based on religion are not viable states. Had this been the case, Bangladesh would not have emerged out of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, there would have peace and communal amity in Pakistan and there would have been no turmoil across the Muslim world. The Kashmiri leadership would commit a serious mistake if it fails to take cognizance of what happened in Egypt and what has been happening in Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Sudan, Bahrain, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, to mention only a few countries in turmoil. It would be a sad day if the Kashmiri leadership fails to recognize the signs of the time and continues to indulge in activities it has been indulging in since decades. Democracy is the best form of government and India is one country that believes in the right to life, right to equality, right to live and prosper and right to justice.
