NH 1-A closed for 4th consecutive day | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 4: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the fourth consecutive day today due to snowfall and landslides on several places on the 300-km long road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country. The traffic on NH1-A remained disrupted as the Highway was closed due to landslides at Ramban, Digdol, Shaitani Nullah and several other places, triggered by heavy rains. Hundreds of vehicles, including trucks, buses and other passenger carrying modes of transport remained stranded on either side of the Jawahar tunnel on the highway. Official sources said the Border Roads Organistion (BRO) responsible for maintenance of the highway, has pressed into service hundreds of men and sophisticated machines to clear the road. However, incessant rain severely affected the road clearance operation, they said. Due to the fresh snowfall at Patnitop, Jawahar tunnel and Banihal the road has become slippery, which is quite dangerous for any type of traffic movement, the sources added No fresh vehicle was allowed to leave from Jammu or Srinagar this morning, a traffic police spokesman said. As and when the highway reopens again, the vehicles, stranded on the highway on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel would be allowed to move towards their respective destinations before allowing fresh traffic, he added. The closure of the highway has resulted in shortage of essential commodities in the Valley, including meat and chicken while the prices of vegetables and other items have also gone up.
