| 1080 dead in over 6000 road accidents in J&K during 2010 | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 4: While government claims of taking measures to deal with the road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir, but if the government data is taken into consideration, its alarming that the number of accidents has increased in past three years particularly in Jammu region.
Official records revealed that at least 1080 persons were killed in 6129 road accidents across the state last year. Jammu region leads the accident tally with 4303 incidents, claiming the lives of 777 persons while in Kashmir valley 1826 accidents were registered in which 303 persons lost their lives.
As per the official record while the number of road accidents recorded in between Batote to Kisthtwar was 183 in 2008, it increased to 213 in 2008 and in year 2010 the number of road accidents was 256. Most accidents on the Jammu Kashmir National Highway are in between Batote to Banihal and from Batote to Kisthtwar. It is seen that the there are more accidents in winter season than summer due to heavy rainfall and snowfall.
Data claims that the main cause behind the road accidents were rash driving, use of alcohol while driving, use of mobile phone during drive, overloading, bad condition of roads as well as vehicles.
State government is in process to overcome the number of accidents by improving the road connectivity, but every time due to the land sliding in the hilly areas of the state caused accidents which result lost of many lives every year.
Many of the vehicles on the road are outdated and need to replace. But there is no such check on them and also it happened due to rush of traffic on the road.
Various organizations many times demanded to the state government for better connectivity of road, but nothing has been done.
State government also plan to run railway, this also help in reducing road accident, but this plan is still under process and take more time to complete.
Jammu, claiming the lives of 192 persons while in Samba 73 persons killed in 358 mishaps and 111 lost their lives in 400 accidents in Kathua. As far as Udhampur district is concerned, 481 road accidents occurred last year, claiming the lives of 85 persons, in Reasi 38 people killed in 169 accidents while in Doda district 226 accidents were recorded last year in which 50 persons were killed.
In Kishtwar district, 82 road accidents took place and 55 persons were killed while hilly Ramban district witnessed the death of 94 persons in 349 accidents. In border district of Poonch, 173 road accidents were taken place last year and 23 deaths were reported while in Rajouri the figure of road mishaps was 364 in which 51 persons lost their lives. In Kashmir Valley, Srinagar leads the list with 379 accidents, claiming the lives of 55 persons while Ganderbal witnessed 86 accidents leading to death of 36 persons. In Budgam 126 accidents were registered in which 24 persons lost their lives, in Anantnag, 217 accidents claimed the lives of 30 people. In Kulgam, the number of accidents was 176, killing 22 persons while Pulwama was the only district where the number of people killed in road accidents was just 2 in 82 road mishaps.
In Shopian, the data says that 48 accidents were registered killing 9 persons whereas Awantipura reported 147 accidents leading to death of 37 people.
In Baramulla, 168 accidents were registered killing 15 persons, in Bandipura 61 accidents in which 11 people lost their lives. Kupwara recorded 59 accidents and 6 deaths last year while Handwara witnessed 56 accidents, claiming the lives of 11 people.
In Leh, 85 accidents were registered causing the death of 28 persons while Kargil witnessed 68 accidents killing 6 persons during last year. As many as 68 accidents took place in Sopore, claiming the lives of 11 persons.
