| Threat of yellow rust looms large in border belt, farmers worried | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 4: Farmers across border belt of Jammu region fear loss of wheat crop as the unusual rains have given rise to the yellow rust disease.
Reports say that yellow rust, a fungal disease has affected more than 60 per cent of wheat crop across the region which could damage the prospect of the farmers to have bumper crops. Farmers in the RS Pura, Samba, Hiranagar and Kathua areas now fear that they may lose the entire crop, if the Agriculture Department does not take timely action.
Though yellow rust had damaged the crop earlier also, the authorities do not seem to be concerned about it. However the farmers also blame the agricultural department for not providing with fungicides to save their crops. “Yellow rust affected our crops last year, causing monetary losses, but the Agriculture Department did not do enough to create awareness among the farmers and at the same time not initiated enough measures to provide fungicides,” alleged Kulbir Singh, a farmer of R.S Pura village.
A number of farmers said ministers and senior bureaucrats visited their villages a few days ago, but did not announce any compensation. “Minister for Revenue and Relief Raman Bhalla inspected our fields and assured us of compensation. But no announcement had been made by the government so far,” said Manjeet Singh, a farmer of Suchetgarh village. He added that they were worried that if inclement weather continued in the coming days, the remaining crop would also be damaged.
An agriculture expert at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) said, “The disease grows under low temperature conditions, especially in the sub-mountainous areas. It can be easily recognised from the appearance of yellow powdery stripes on the leaves of the wheat crop.”

They said wheat crop was growing in such a way that it made us to think about huge return this season. But due to the recently appearing yellow spots and layers on green wheat plants they fear otherwise.
It is pertinent to mention here that yellow rust is a disease that appears with yellow-colored layer on leaves as well as on other parts of the wheat plants. It can be observed that this time the price of the wheat will be hike and the demand is also on peak. Due to which the common masses has to face problem.
As regarding to the Kharif crop season was also not good due to the strong hail storm the farmer has to bear heavy loss, but still didn’t get any compensation from government.
If this season’s crop also gets destroyed then from where the farmers get the compensation.
Puran Chand a farmer and resident of Samba district said that we have spend huge amount of money on the cultivation of crop every season, but we didn’t get even what we spent, not to talk what we earn from there.
