Seminar on ‘Surgical Intervention in Brain Hemorrhage’ held
3/5/2011 11:22:36 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, March 5: A seminar on survival intervention in brain hemorrhage was held at SLIMS wherein the specialists highlighted the various reasons behind the hemorrhage.
As per the specialists, brain hemorrhage is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in human beings. In some patients a blood vessel in the brain may have an aneurysm (abnormal dilatation of vessel wall) which can rupture and lead to massive brain hemorrhage.
Every year 70-80 thousand people develop brain hemorrhage due to this blood vessel abnormality. Most of the patients suffer from hemorrhage because of this disorder in the age group of 50-60 years; but in some it may happen in a relative younger age.
Data from SKIMS have shown the incidence of rupture is higher in winter in females. 10-15% patients die before reaching hospital and another 10% die in the last few days.
If no surgical intervention is undertaken, 45-50% patients die in the first month. Today in a seminar, the surgical intervention of this disease as available at SKIMS, was discussed by the Department of Neuro-surgery. Prof. Altaf Omer Ramzan informed that in the last 3 years 75 such patients were operated in the Neuro-surgery Department of SKIMS with 91% success rate.

The basic data was presented by Dr. Furqan and the seminar was chaired by Prof. Mushtaq Ahmed Wani, Head, Department of Neurology, SKIMS. Director SKIMS, Dr. Abdul Hamid Zargar, complemented the Neuro-surgical and anaesthetic teams for achieving these excellent results in a relatively delicate disease. The seminar was attended by residents, postgraduates, post-doctoral students and faculty of SKIMS and SKIMS Medical College.
