Garlic framing made possible during winters by DIHAR | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 5 : In order to increase the awareness level among the local populace, ‘Forever in Operations’ Division has been organising Training Capsules in concert with Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) on Advanced Vegetation Production Technologies. During one such capsule, the scientists of DIHAR brought out that garlic cultivation was even possible during snow bound winter months provided correct procedures were followed. Kargil combines the climatic condition of both the arctic and the desert and therefore is often referred to as a “Cold Desert”. Rainfall in the area is negligible and heavy snowfall is experienced in winter. The summer being short, only one crop of barley / gram, fodder, wheat and pulses is grown. The District has acute shortage of vegetables both in summer as well as in winter. In spite of the assurances and free garlic seeds distribution, the local populace considered it impossible and contrary to the age old knowledge they possessed and were reluctant to cultivate garlic on their own accord. ‘Forever in Operations’ Division had to then step in again and convinced four to five farmers from nearby villages to make available one Kanal (500 sqm) of their land so that the Army could cultivate garlic in that land to prove that garlic cultivation could be done in winters to reap rich benefits. The benefits of this persistent effort by the Army will be reaped by the locals during the month of Apr/May this year when the snow melts and reveals the bounty of garlic.
