PM’s announcement generates new hopes among West Pak, PoK refugees | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, MAR 5:- With Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s announcement that he is fully aware of the problems and hardships of both West Pakistan and PoK refugees who migrated to this side of J&K after partition in 1947, has generated a new hope among these hapless people. Dr. Singh during his one day visit to Jammu while addressing a gathering at Jagati township said being a refugee himself he can feel the pain and agony of the refugees much more better than anybody without mincing words Prime Minister said that soon the steps will be taken by the Government to ameliorate their lot too. The PM who admitted that much was not done to ameliorate the lot of these hapless people. PM said his Government will soon take steps in this regard. Expressing high hopes on Prime Minister both West Pak and POK refugees term it a positive step and they have expressed optimism that Union Government will take concrete steps in settling the problems of these refugees who have been completely neglected by both Central and State Governments during last 60 years. We are hopeful that Dr. Singh will keep his word and announce measures in mitigating the sufferings of both West Pak and POK refugees, said Laba Ram Ghandhi Chairman of the West Pak Refugees committee. He said problems being faced by these refugees are grave as successive Governments failed to take initiative over the years in this regard. The Central Government should convince J&K Government to make the necessary changes in the State Constitution for grant of citizenship rights to West Pak refugees he added. He said moreover Government must take also initiative for settlement of problems of POK refugees as demanded by their leadership. These refugees be paid full compensation of their properties left back in PoK and also settled in a township as per their demands. Expressing the hope that Prime Minister will come upto the expectations of PoK refugees and take initiative for their settlement in the state on the same pattern as was done in case of displaced people from Kashmir, Ram Kumar a refugee from PoK said. The people have suffered a lot over last 60 years and their children have a bleak future. The Government besides rehabilitation should provide reservations to the refugees in professional Collages and Government services.
