EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 6: The 12th Tree Talk was organised at Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, here today. Over 90 participants including experts , subject specialists , wildlife enthusiasts , University Professors , research scholars , poets ,folk healers , women and children remained totally engrossed for 4 hours long tree talk session . Initiating discussion about trees of Jammu , O P Sharma focused on prominent medicinal, religious , edible and ornamental trees namely Alstonia Scholaris ( Scholar Tree or Black board Tree ), Sita Ashok, Saraca Asoca (Name Ashok means without grief, English name is therefore Tree of sadness ), Ram Ashok ( Polyalthia longifolia ) , Queen’s Wrightia ( locally called Dudhaan in Dogri ,Dudhi in Hindi) , Queen’s Crape Myrtle is Jarul of Bengalis and is nearest relative of our Panjtara ( L. indica ) , Siamese Cassia , Indian Laburnum ( flowers of Amaltas are reported to be eaten as vegetable in earlier days ) Dr Yash Pal Sharma while referring to earlier Tree Talks highlighted existence of lesser known trees like Rudraksh , Laung , Haldu , Bursera , Barringtonia , Pichhkari , Mitragyna , Drumstick ,Sita Ashok , Mahua ,Nagkesar , Putranjiva , Kandhaar , Buddha’s Coconut , Meddasakk ,Camphor , False Quinine , Tree of Sadness and admitted that tree talks have enriched our knowledge about cultivated and wild native trees . Principal Govt Women College Prof Nalini Kohli welcomed tree talk participants in the college campus, she appreciated new way of looking at trees and environment. On the occasion, O P Sharma Vidyarthi while highlighting religious, cultural and medicinal significance of trees like Saraca asoca , presented a Sita Ashok sapling to Principal of the College.
