PDP reacts to Omar’s truth & reconciliation demand | ‘Let govt first complete probes in last year’s killing’ | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Mar 6: Reacting to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s demand for a unanimous resolution seeking from the centre to set up a truth and reconciliation commission to uncover facts about killings and disappearances in Jammu and Kashmir since 1990, Peoples Democratic Party has asked the CM to first complete probes in the killings of people in last year’s summer unrest. “The Chief Minister should concentrate on probes of last year’s killings and stop harassment of people instead of making statements about truth and reconciliation commission,” PDP President Mehbooba Mufti said today. She asked the government to stop arrest spree to create conducive atmosphere for reconciliation with youth. “Till people responsible for last year’s killings aren’t punished, such statements hold no meaning,” she said. However, BJP, PDF chairman Hakim Mohammad Yasin and CPI (M) State Secretary, M Y Tarigami, supported Omar’s demand. “The commission should investigate all militancy related cases. The commission should also investigate the causes of militancy in Kashmir as militancy is the reason for all the problems in J&K,” BJP said. “We aren’t against setting up of commission, but accession of Kashmir to India is final,” BJP said. Tarigami while welcoming Omar’s demand said a resolution should be passed in state Assembly and then sent to the central government. Hakim Yasin also welcomed the demand and said, “Government should keep its promise and not make statements only.” However, National Panthers Party Chief Prof Bhim Singh termed the demand as a “joke.” “It is a joke. State government has lost the confidence of people and they are making such statements to restore their credibility. I had demanded for probe by a Supreme Court judge in last year’s killings. What happened to that,” Prof Singh said
