Jethmalani hints at Kashmir Committee’s new JK assignment | `Musharraf was India’s best friend’ | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Mar 6 : Stressing need for engagement of separatists at “ respectable socio-political level and not at Home Ministry level” chairman of the erstwhile Kashmir Committee, Ram Jethmalani today said the Committee will take up the dialogue process after interlocutors. He was speaking at a panel discussion `Should Kashmiri Pandits Look for An Option Beyond the Nation’ organized by Panun Kashmir, in New Delhi. The Committee was formed by the NDA government and held several rounds of talks with the separatists. The interlocutors during their recent visit to the state had ruled out any possibility of Committee’s fresh involvement in Kashmir. The noted lawyer and former Union Law Minister said the committee will take up the dialogue process with Kashmiri leaders who did not meet the interlocutors for good reasons. “We need to find solutions in partnership with Kashmiri leadership and take Pakistan point of view also into consideration,” Jethmalani said. He described former Pakistani ruler Pervez Musharraf as ‘one of the greatest friends’ of India who had tried to settle Kashmir through track-II diplomacy. Giving details, he said despite being a dictator, he was “one of the greatest friends India had” and talked about a set of proposals a friend of the military ruler brought to him for resolving Kashmir issue. “I was excited over the proposals and made some changes which were sent back to them. They had also accepted these. I have now put them in a book of mine,” he said. He lamented that “government of India never had the time to settle Kashmir.” He alleged the UPA government had been “too deeply involved in scams” and can only do something when it “gets out” of scams. “This government should go. If opposition unites, it can be knocked off in two months. There are good people in Congress too. May be a coalition can be formed of good people from Congress and other parties,” Jethmalani said. Kashmir issue can be solved in a manner which will ensure return of Pandits to their homes with honour and dignity." Senior Supreme Court Lawyer, Ashok Bhan said Kashmiris were yearning and calling for peace and lasting solution to end the continuing cycle of both state and non state violence. “It is therefore necessary to engage with real representatives of people and suffering Kashmiri Pandits who are wronged and exiled. Kashmir Committee will soon formulate the strategy and programe of meetings with all the stakeholders,” he said.
