Avalanche damages 5 houses at Paddar | | | Early Times Report KISHTWAR, Mar 06: Five houses were damaged completely in a snow avalanche at Ongie in Paddar area of Kishtwar Saturday. There was, however, no casualty as the inmates managed to flee to safety before the avalanche hit their houses, official sources said. The damaged houses belonged to Ravail Singh, his brother Trilok Singh, sons of Rumail Singh, Sardar Singh, son of Mela Ram, Mehar Chand, son of Hari Lal, and Swami Raj, son of Pantoo Ram. Several Paddar villages were still under snow cover and there was about 5 ft snow at Ongine. Police and civil officers from Gulabgarh reached the village after covering a long distance on foot to assess the situation. Rescue teams from Kishtwar, however, could not reach there due to the blocking of Kishtwar-Paddar road. Deputy commissioner G R Bhagat said possible measures had been taken to ensure the safety of Paddar residents.Kishtwar MLA Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo has demanded compensation to the affected people. Meanwhile, Kishtwar faced acute shortage of essential commodities as the road remained blocked to vehicular traffic for several days. Petrol pumps had also run dry.
