Opposition boycott stalemate: Will govt accept demand of House Committee probe ? | Speaker convenes BAC meeting | | Jammu: In the light of entire opposition having decided to stay away from the proceedings of the Assembly until their demand was met, will the NC led coalition government go ahead with setting up of a House committee to probe into alleged irregularities and misuse of government funds by its ministers in their constituencies …….? This is the key question about which the government will have to take a decision, tomorrow being important day of the business as the Finance Minister AR Rather has to present the Budget in the House.
In order to break the stalemate that has occurred due to entire Opposition having decided to boycott the proceedings of the Legislative Assembly, the Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone has convened a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee tomorrow morning before the House will commence the day’s business. The parties in opposition have also decided to meet in the morning to discuss the strategy to be adopted tomorrow. The Speaker has already communicated the Business Advisory Committee about the crucial meeting tomorrow through individual letters though it has not been mentioned as to what is the agenda of the meeting early in the morning. However, it is abundantly clear that the meeting has been convened in order to find out some ‘alternative’ to ensure business is carried out as usual with opposition in attendance. Business Advisory Committee has members of all the opposition parties on board.
As for nearly 40 legislators of all the Opposition parties who have put up a united face this time, all are firm in what they have communicated and conveyed to the Speaker unequivocally- nothing less than setting up of a House committee to probe into the irregularities in distribution of funds and development units by the key ministries of Health, Finance, Planning and Education. The allegation is that some ministers belonging both to the National Conference as well as Congress have adopted constituency centric approach in prioritizing everything for their own constituencies, resulting in deprivation and discrimination of other constituencies. The entire Opposition was up in arms on Saturday substantiating their allegations with certain instances. They alleged what has been done by some ministers does not only amount to discrimination with other constituencies but also their actions show brazen misuse of authority and loss to the exchequer.
“ We will be participating the meeting convened by the Speaker tomorrow……as of now we are firm on our demand ……which is quite legitimate in the wake of the allegations and points raised in the House on Saturday…”, said MY Tarigami, senior leader and legislator of CPM. It is not the question of the opposition alone but the entire House, including the members of the ruling alliance have such apprehensions in mind. The question is whether is there anything that has been done contrary to the norms by some ministers, Tarigami who was vociferous in echoing the demand of setting up House Committee said adding that political lines should not be drawn on this issue as it is linked with governance and larger interests of the people.
