Lecture on methods of teaching mathematics organised

JAMMU, March 07: MIER College of Education organized a guest lecture on “ Alternated Methods of Teaching Mathematics” at its B.C Road campus.
The chief resource person was Prof Gurucharan Singh Bhalla, an eminent Professor of Mathematics at the Bronx University, New York, USA. The mathematics educators and teacher trainees who have taken mathematics as a teaching subject at the B.Ed level attended the lecture.
Dr Renu Gupta, Director MIER Group of Institutions, Dr Adit Gupta, Joint Director MIER, Dr Annie Kaul, H.O.D B. Ed, Suman Gupta, Lecturer, Teaching of Mathematics and other faculty members of MIER College of Education and Model Academy School were also present.
Welcoming the distinguished speaker, Dr Adit Gupta highlighted the achievements of Prof. Bhalla who happens to be a veteran teacher, teaching mathematics for 55 years and conducting workshops at various schools and colleges of India.
In his address Dr. Gupta reiterated that mathematics is a beautiful subject. It has to be dealt innovatively and taught interestingly to make it acceptable amongst students. He hoped that this lecture will be instrumental in helping the teacher trainees to become better teachers and imbibe the qualities of Prof. Bhalla who himself is a very popular teacher .
Dr Bhalla, during his interaction with the teacher trainees acquainted them with the history of mathematics and its utility as a tool for teaching mathematics. He related various interesting stories and anecdotes related to mathematics, which can be used to motivate and ignite the young minds.
He then highlighted the contributions of celebrated Indian mathematians like Aryabhatta, Bhaskaracharya, Brahmagupta, Mahavira, Sridhara, Leelavati and Ramanujan who were way ahead of their western counterparts. Some very exciting and mind-boggling illustrative problems were put forward to the audience.
To conclude the session, Dr. Annie Koul presented the formal vote of thanks. The programme was conducted by Ms. Tanisha Nargotra, a B.Ed student.
