Govt to strenghten farm and small industrial sectors
3/7/2011 9:57:28 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu,March 7 : The National Conference led Government has decided to lay emphasis on farm and industrial sectors not only for boosting production but for increasing employment avenues as well.
The Government is worried over the rise in the problem of unemployment when till date over 5.96 lakh unemployed youth stand registered in various employment exchanges in the state.
Official sources said that under a well coordinated plan, measures were being taken to strengthen the base for small industrial units by imparting skill development to various categories of youth and to make available the required funds for setting up these units.
A survey has revealed that besides the farm sector, micro and small enterprises hold tremendous promise in Jammu and Kashmir, both for inclusive economic growth and for employment generation. For the promotion of such enterprises, new industrial infrastructure is being developed in the three regions of the State.
The sources also revealed that 1073 units with an employment potential of around 5,500 persons have been set up by the Khadi Village Industries Board. Technological and design support is being provided to the artisans of the State for contemporizing the traditional products. Training in different crafts has been imparted in large numbers through the existing 553 handicraft and 100 handloom training centres.
About 3,507 handicraft artisans have been covered under the “Rajiv Gandhi Shilpi Shawasthya Bima Yojna” and 7,358 handloom weavers have been covered under the Health Insurance Scheme.
The idea behind this plan is to enable the state to produce as much handloom and power loom products as could boost state's exports which was required for strengthening the state's internal resources and the revenue. The carpet and the handloom industry had been hit by militancy related violence and steps were being taken to make up for the losses by setting up more small units for increasing production and exports.
