Night temperature improves, day colder in Kashmir, Ladakh | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Mar 7 : There was considerable improvement in the night temperature in the Kashmir valley, but it was a cold day today due to cloudy weather. Kargil, where the minimum was up by about 6 degrees, remained coldest with minus 11.6 degrees Celsius this morning. The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open for one-way traffic. A Met department spokesman said rain or snow would occur at isolated places in the region during the next two days and the weather would be cloudy in the summer capital, Srinagar. In Srinagar, the minimum was 3 degree this morning, which was one degree above normal. Gulmarg, the world famous ski resort in north Kashmir, remained coldest when the minimum was recorded at minus 7 degrees this morning. However, it was three notches up by yesterday when the night temperature was minus 10 degrees. There was also an improvement of two degrees in Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir, base camp of holy Amarnath cave shrine. Against yesterday's minus 3.4 degrees, it was minus 1.4 degree this morning. There was also considerable improvement in the minimum temperature elsewhere in the Valley. Today vehicles were allowed to ply from Jammu to Srinagar. However, no vehicle will be allowed from Srinagar to avoid traffic jam on the highway, the only road connecting the Valley with the rest of the country. Majority of far-flung and remote areas in north Kashmir, particularly near the Line of Control (LoC) remained cut off due to snowfall since December 1 last year. People in Ladakh region, which remained cut off from the rest of the state due to closure of Zojila pass, continued to shiver though there was also improvement in the night temperature. Leh recorded minus 8.6 degrees as the minimum temperature against yesterday's 10.4 degrees.
