Let Omar stop blowing hot and cold
3/7/2011 10:57:57 PM
Critics of PDP supremo,Mufti Mohd.Syeed, usually blame him for toeing the separatists' line whenever he talks about withdrawal of troops and AFSPA.The Mufti is being accused of hijacking the separatists'agenda by favouring the opening of the channels of dialogue with Islamabad and those who are on the other side of the fence in Kashmir. But these critics usually do not take note of the statements and utterances of Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah. He is the first chief Minister who has questioned the irrevocability of the state's accession with India when he stated last year that Jammu and Kashmir had acceded and not mergd with India.Of late he has been demanding solution to the Kahmir issue which is political. And if one reads between lines his statements and speeches, inside or outside the state legislature, one would not hesitate blaming him for hijacking Mufti's agenda. If Omar and the Mufti try to hijack the separatists' agenda they do it with a purpose.Mufti
Sayeed, who is in the opposition, can raise even ulterior issues in order to enable his PDP to measure muscles with the ruling National Confer ence.Usually it has been the part of Indian political traditions that a political party raises nerve rattling issues when in opposition and follows a lamb like policy when in power.Late Sheikh Abdullah had questioned ,that too openly the state's accession with India, when he was either in the jail or heading the opposition Plebiscite Front. But when he regained power under Sheikh-Indira accord he was on record saying that he had never disputed state's accession to India but had questioned the quantum of accession.
There are many instances which speak of changing loyalities and stands of political leaders. When G.M.Shah was installed as Chief Minister in 1984 he was heard saying that "sau saal pahle Congress ke saath pyaar thaa aur aagey be rahey gaa"(love with congress was there 100 years ago and it will remain in future). But when he lost power after the Congress withdrew support he diD not hesitate dubbing the Congress Government in the centre as a symbol of Brahmin imperialism.Atal Behari Vajpayee used to fulminate against Article 370 but when the Janata Party was voted to power and Vajpayee was inducted as foreign Minister he was seen having changed his policy. He was candid when he said that his known views on Article 370 were when he was in the opposition and "now I am in power I am not against Article 370."If Kashmir is a problem,if it is a dispute,if it is a political prolem,if it is security related problem it is mainly because of the
fluctuations in the policies of ruling as well as opposition political leaders.Usually leaders do not question state's accession with India when they are in power. But the moment they are in the opposition they question the irrovacability of the intrument of accession. When in power they may even defend security forces if they commit minor human rights violations but once they are in the opposition they are loud in condemning the security forces for minor incidents of excesses.
Atleast Omar Abdullah is not one among those who keep his eyes shut on issues that bother people when he is in power. At times one feels intrigued whether Omar is fulminating against the central Government in the capacity of being in alliance with it or in the capacity of an opposition leader. The latest example is his charge that the centre had not fulfilled its promises made to he people of Jammu and Kashmir. He has not explained what promises had remained unimplemented but one knows It fully well that he refers to the promise of withdrawing troops,AFSPA and on releasing all the detainees against whom no serious criminal charges had been framed. While fulminating against the centre on the floor of the Assembly Omar does forget to praise the Government of India for the LIBERAL financial assistance it has been giving to Jammu and Kashmir.Has Omar fulfilled all the promises he and his party leaders had made to people during the 2008
Assembly election?Has he implemented his commitment on eradicating corruption and on improving transparency in his governance?Possibly he has not. Then why anti-centre stance ?He has been finding himelf on a weak wicket since the 2010 summer when the Kashmir valley was rocked and rattled by five-month long protest rallies and violence in which 112 people were killed. In order to remove his pro-centre and pro-Congress image he is trying to opt for an extreme position which, he feels, could help him in gaining his political stature among the people. One expects that Omar does not copy his predecessors by blowing hot and cold in the same breath.(eom)
