Assembly Session
Congress allows NC to exercise unbridled freedom, faces people's ire

NEHA
ET REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 7: The NC on March 4 said on the floor of the Assembly that "political promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) by the Government of India remained unfulfilled"; that "J&K is a political issue and we can never forget it"; that "time and again, we have tried to remind the Prime Minister and UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi that some political promises were made with the people of J&K and it is important that progress should be made on these promises"; that "there had been talks about resolving Kashmir problem on humanitarian grounds, not to repeat the mistakes committed vis-à-vis Kashmir and repeated promises of unconditional talks with all shades of opinion"; that "some of my friends (read BJP leaders) were upset over my (October 6, 2010) statement (state has acceded to and not merged with India) but this is a historical fact"; that "facts cannot be negated by anyone"; and that "this is the time to recognize facts and the truth is that the first time even Parliament agreed that Kashmir is a political issue and its solution has to be unique as its accession with the country was in a unique situation and under unique circumstances."
One can understand the compulsions of the NC when it indulges in rabble-rousing, questions the very status of J&K and demands political solution to the so-called political problem in Kashmir. One can also understand its compulsions when it distorts history to mislead public opinion and establish that it's no different from those seeking separation of Kashmir. After all, it has to compete with the separatist outfits in Kashmir and pander to its communal constituency in order to weaken its main political rival, the PDP, and retain control over its constituency and expand it, if possible. It's a different story that nobody in Kashmir questions the credentials of the NC and the methodology it has all along employed to remain in power. Had the people in Kashmir ever cared to verify the historical facts and not allowed themselves to be carried away by the false and motivated propaganda, the position of the NC today would have been totally different. It's, however, true that its support-base in Kashmir has considerably dwindled and that it's in power because the Congress has handed over the state power to it on a platter.
What is it that the Congress and the Government of India have been doing to expose the rabble-rousers and set the record straight? Neither the Congress nor the Congress-led UPA Government has done anything to controvert the baneful influence of the insidious propaganda being unleashed by the Kashmir-based "mainstream" political parities in and outside the Assembly, and even in New Delhi and elsewhere. There is nothing which could even remotely suggest that the Congress and the Government of India have ever tried to clear the cobwebs of confusion and tell the nation that whatever the Kashmir-based "mainstream" political outfits or the separatist outfits have been saying is incorrect; that the Government of India had never ever made any promise with any Kashmiri leader, not even with Sheikh Abdullah; and that the accession of the state to India was strictly in accordance with the law on the subject.
On the contrary, one can catalogue umpteen instances to show that the Congress and the Government of India have only added more to the confusion, thus enabling the vested interests in Kashmir to queer the Indian pitch in the state in general and Kashmir in particular. It is a matter of grave concern that the NC makes highly controversial statements on the floor of the Assembly and in the presence of the Congress ministers and legislators flouting the very Constitution of the State as well as the Indian Constitution and goes scot-free, with its alliance partner, Congress, virtually endorsing the break-India line by remaining mum.
Something has gone fundamentally wrong with the Congress and the Congress-led Government of India. And, that's the reason both are becoming increasingly unpopular with each passing day. There are potent reasons to believe that if elections were held today in the country, the Congress would suffer a massive defeat. It's no wonder then that the bulk of print and electronic media has joined hands to expose the Congress party and its misdeeds, including its knee-deep involvement in multi-billion scams. It would be no exaggeration to say that it is the Supreme Court of India which is playing the shots and forcing the Congress and the Congress-led UPA Government to act. It is because of the intervention of the Supreme Court and under the mounting public pressure that a number of high profile persons had to go to the jail, lose their ministries and face criminal charges, notwithstanding the unwillingness of the Congress-led UPA Government.
It is not only the scams that have dented the image of the Congress. It is its external policy and policy towards J&K as well as policy towards communalism and terrorism that have also contributed considerably to the unpopularity of the Congress and its government at the centre. The situation has reached a the point where even certain persons have started asking question: who is ruling the country, the Congress and the Congress-led Government or the likes of the controversial Hasan Ali (India's biggest tax evader) or some foreign powers?
