EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu: Opposition parties in the state have sharply reacted to the budget terming it as jugullary of figures, old routine story told in a new fashion having no relief for the poor and common masses. However, the ruling Congress came out in praise terming it as people- friendly budget.
Terming the budget presented by Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather as routine, Peoples Democratic Party president, Mehbooba Mufti, regretted that no relief has been given to poor people, farmers, unemployed youth and employees in the budget provisions.
Mehbooba said that keeping in view the soaring prices of essential commodities, poor people were hoping that Finance Minister would give some relief to them in the budget provision.
She, however, regretted that no especial provision has been made to keep a check on soaring prices of essential commodities. She observed that some relief must be given to the poor people in the budget. Mehbooba said that no effective steps have been to control inflation in the State. She also mentioned that Finance Minister has not presented any proposal to accelerate growth rate in the State.
Strongly opposing proposal of the Finance Minister to increase tax on items entered the State through Lakhanpur, PDP chief said that this step would have cascading effect as it will further increase prices of essential commodities and the poor people would be worst suffer of the this unnecessary step
Opposition BJP termed the budget 'anti people' and mere jugulary of figures which are not going to provide any relief to common masses.
CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam, M Y Tarigami flayed the government for coming up with a directionless budget, which he said is same old story unfolded in new fashion and lacks roadmap to address the serious concerns of the economy.
He termed the budget as replica of old story with no futuristic and visionary policy inputs to address the issues for improving our economy. He said the government has failed to provide food security despite its knowledge of non-availability of ration at sale depots. He said there is no mention of Universal Public Distribution System the state needed to tide over the problem of food shortage. A significant section of our population has not been covered under PDS for which budgetary support for procurement of food grains from open market should have been reflected in the budget.
The employees' leaders also expressed disatisfaction with what has been assured in the bduget contending there is nothing outstanding or out of the way step. "The government has given half the things which they promised earler....all these were overdue steps", said Nazir Ahmad, one of leaders of Secretariate Employees union.
