Sham urges women folk to gain social status | Bhalla distributes Rs. 1.24 cr among drought hit families | | Early Times Report JAMMU, MARCH 08-Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Mr. Raman Bhalla today distributed relief worth Rs. 1. 24 crore among 72 drought hit families of Akhnoor Tehsil under National Calamity Relief Fund (NCRF) at a function held at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Akhnoor. Addressing a large gathering, Mr. Bhalla said on the concerted efforts of Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah, the central Government has approved Rs. 90 crore for distribution of relief to drought hit families of the State adding that directions have been issued to Revenue Officers for early submission of the details of affected families of their respective areas so that the financial assistance could be distributed in the form of cheques through public darbars. Regarding land deficiency compensation to displaced families of 1947, 1965 and 1971, the Minister said UPA Government headed by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has allocated Rs. 49 crore to the state Government adding that the relief amounting to Rs. 1.50 lakh to each affected family is being disbursed in public darbars in their respective colonies. He said State and Central Governments are fully aware of refugees hardships adding that a memorandum worth Rs. 1775 crore has been submitted to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during his visit to Jammu for one time settlement of their issues. He informed that most of colonies of refugees are being regularized under 254-C Revenue Act adding that the areas would be developed on modern lines by providing all basic amenities at par with urban pockets. In his address, Minister for Health, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma thanked the Revenue Minister for taking keen interest for providing financial assistance to drought hit families of Akhnoor tehsil. He said coalition Government has launched several schemes for mitigating the hardships of farmer community by providing loans, agricultural equipments, seeds besides irrigation facilities upto tail end. Affirming his commitment to women’s empowerment, the Health Minister said the Government is moving towards providing one-third reservation for women in the Assembly, Civic and Panchayat elections. He decried the low female literacy rate as well as the maternal mortality rate besides the exceptionally low sex-ratio. "The gender disparity on the economic front is reflected in the low female work participation rate of 25.7 per cent as compared to 51.0 per cent for males," he said.
