Food minister faces ire of BJP, Panthers Party legislators | Migrants given ration from Jammu share, alleges Jammu opposition | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 8: In the series of walkouts by the opposition in State Legislative Assembly ever since the commencement of the ongoing Budget Session on February 28, the House today witnessed one more walkout before the BJP and PP legislators today raised noise over the issu eof alleged distribution of ration to migrants from th egeneral quota meant for people of Jammu. The trouble erupted during Question Hour when the senior BJP leader Ashok Khajuria did not agree with the reply of Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Qamar Ali Akhoon’s during the question hour and alleged ration quota meant for Jammu to migrants putting up in the winter capital of the state. The Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Qamar Ali Akhoon informed the House that 27,011 metric tonnes of foodgrains are being supplied in Jammu division every month. However Khajuria expressed dissatisfaction and said, “Minister’s reply is not based on facts as for the last more than twenty years the ration quota of Jammu is being diverted to migrants from Kashmir…. Ration is being supplied on discriminatory lines.” Khajuria’s party colleague Prof Chaman Lal Gupta too backed him by saying, “ Migrants are being provided ration from the share of Jammu city.” As soon as the senior BJP leaders leveled these allegations, the other BJP members barring MLA Basohli Jagdish Sapolia and MLA Nagrota Jugal Kishore, who were not present in the House, stood up and started to shout loudly alleging gross discrimination in distribution of ration supply in the state. Echoing their protest for few moments, all the BJP legislators staged a walk out from the House at 10: 40 am. Soon after the BJP MLAs departure from the House, it was the turn of the Panthers Party to rake up the issue of denial of ration supply to the Jammu migrants. Raising slogans, the Panthers Party legislators Balwant Mankotia and Yashpal Kundal, trooped into the well of the House alleging that Jammu migrants were not being treated at par with the Kashmiri migrants. Mankotia said Doda, Talwara and Rajouri refugees were not getting equal distribution of ration as compared to Kashmiri Pandit migrants. Government is trying to mislead the House by providing wrong information. The legislators came into the well and staged sit-in for a while to lodge their protest. The Speaker of the Assembly Mohammad Akbar Lone asked the Panthers’ legislators to go back to their seats, however, instead of occupying his seat Balwant Mankotia quietly moved out of the House at 10: 49 am. In the meantime, the BJP legislators returned to the House to participate in further proceedings. PDP member Zulfkar Ali, Jammu State Morcha (JSM) member Ashwani Kumar and Congress member G M Saroori, also alleged that there is a grave scarcity of foodgrains as ration does not reach to grass root level due to "bunglings and misappropriation by officials." Opposition leader Mehbooba Mufti and CPI(M) member M Y Tarigami stood up from their seats and said that the government should display seriousness over the issue and put in place a mechanism to ensure that ration reaches to everyone. After a ‘peaceful’ business for about half an hour, the House again witnessed uproarious scenes and this time over the issue of the alleged policies of the government hurting the interests of the farmers. Agitated over the farmers’ plight, the agitated BJP legislators rose up and started to proceed towards the well of the House and after a brief protest, staged walkout from the House. Amid slogans, ‘Kisan Virodhi Sarkar, Hai Hai’, the BJP legislators walked out of the House. |
