3/9/2011 10:54:16 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Udhampur, March 9: On the night 08/09 March 2011, the Indian Army troops located at Baraub in Gurez Sector once again provided active & immediate support when around midnight the entire village of Baraub was engulfed by fire.

The co-located Army units rushed to the spot as almost all three rows of approximately 90 houses in the village were ablaze and the villagers were rendered homeless. All efforts initially were concentrated on evacuating the trapped villagers, specially women and children, as majority of them were asleep at that point of time.

While the villagers were busy retrieving their belongings from the burning homes, the Army continued its relief operations unabated throughout the night till the arduous task of dousing the fire was completed by 0500hrs in the morning. Though the Army was successful in preventing loss to human life, the loss to livestock & cattle was approx 350 goats/ sheep, 45 horses & over 125 buffaloes (Zoombas). Unfortunately, one fourth of this village was gutted due to the fire

The soldiers continued their sustained and unrelenting efforts, by providing shelter to the homeless in the Army Goodwill School, Baraub. Army doctors were pressed in service in providing medical aid to the injured. In addition, the entire population of approx 400 persons were distributed food and provided blankets by the troops.

The Army further plans providing measures for the early rehabilitation of all villagers whose houses have been burnt in the tragedy to ameliorate the extreme hardships of local population during this protracted and harsh calamity.
