One raped, another escapes rape bid on International Women's Day
3/10/2011 12:41:24 AM

BHARAT BHUSHAN

JAMMU, Mar 09: When on the eve of centenary celebrations of International Women's Day, women Tuesday joined hands around the world to reclaim attention on what can be right and equal for them,
two hapless women in the winter capital city here drew attention of the people for "wrong" reasons.
While one was raped, abortive bid was made to outrage the modesty of the other.
Both of them got mentally shattered on a day when functions were held across the world to celebrate the political, social and economic achievements of women past, present and future.
The first incident took place at Marh in Nagrota when a driver, whom police sources identified as Manzoor Ahmad, approached a woman who was working in her field.
He forced her to accompany him to the nearby forest area where he allegedly outraged her modesty. After he freed her, she straightway came home and narrated the incident to her parents who, in turn,
brought the matter to the notice of Nagrota police station. Acting on their complaint, police picked up the accused from Nagrota area and booked him in a rape case.
Another incident took place in the city's Pir Mitha area. The matter came to light when Pooja approached Pir Mitha police station with a complain against Surinder Kumar of Prem Nagar that he had allegedly attempted to rape her.
She also alleged that the accused had torn her clothes, while trying to overpower her, the sources added. A police party led by Pir Mitha police station SHO, Inspector Sajjad had arrested the accused and booked him under sections 376, 511, 342 and 323 of RPC.
An alleged case of harassment of a woman for dowry also came to light yesterday when Megha Kakkar, daughter of Vijay Kakkar of New Plots, lodged a complaint against her husband Rahul Sharma of New
Delhi and his parents. Sources said though efforts were being to empower women in the state too, some social organisations needed to come forward to help the women victims of sexual harassment.
