Cop hurt critically after bullet pierces his chin at DPL | | | JAMMU, Mar 09: A reserve police wing cop was today wounded critically after his service rifle went off under mysterious circumstances at district police lines (DPL) here and the bullet pierced through his chin. Cop Murtaza Ali of Mendhar had lunch at DPL mess and was coming down the stairs when his rifle went off all of a sudden. The bullet pierced his chin and came out of his forehead, injuring him seriously, police sources said. He was soon rushed by his colleagues to the GMC hospital where his condition was stated to be serious.Murtaza's colleagues said he had tried to end his life after he was denied leave as he wanted to go home at Mendhar to see his ailing mother. They alleged that he was humilated by a senior police officer when he approached him for leave. Sources, however, said it was yet to be ascertained if his rifle had gone off accidentally, or it was a case of attempted suicide after the denial of leave to him. He was recently transferred from Poonch to the reserve police wing for special duty during the days when the state assembly was in session. "The wing cops operate under a nodal officer and mostly wait at PCR for their deployment," sources said and added, "They come to DPL only for food." Asked if the cop had called on him for leave, DSP (DAR) Sanjay Sharma replied in the negative.Murtaza was heading towards his car when the incident occured, sources said.Police had, however, registered a case in this connection.
