Seminar on ‘Democracy-Role of a citizen’ held in Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, March 10: Keeping in view the current political situation in Kashmir, J&K Youth Development Forum today held a one day seminar titled ‘Democracy-Role of a citizen’ in Srinagar. The seminar was attended by lawyers, doctors, journalists, engineers, students and other members of civil society. The participants debated on the current political scenario in Kashmir and how concerted efforts are being made by some unscrupulous elements to attack the tenets of democracy in Kashmir. The participants came down heavily on Pakistan for sponsoring twenty year long period of violence and terrorism in Kashmir. “They have been helping people here to destroy democratic institutions and make people suffer,” said one participant.
The participants were unanimous in counting the benefits of living in a democratic society where people can freely express themselves without any inhibitions. They asked for sustained efforts to strengthen the democracy at grass root levels in Kashmir, “for this people especially the youths have to play a greater role,” said Dr Bashir Ahmad a participant in the seminar.
Last years violence and killing of 110 youths was condemned in strong voice. “2010 took a heavy toll on Kashmir in terms of killing of innocent lives and to the economy,” said Omar Bhat JKYDF Secretary adding that all this happened due to the mischievous designs of some known secessionist backed by Pakistan.” T
The participant expressed their concern over the hostile overtures of China. “The communist China also fears democratic India and it is now hand in glove with Pakistan to create hostile political climate in South Asia particularly with regards to Kashmir,” said Farooq Ganderbali, chairman JKYDF, while referring to repeated Chinese incursions on border and providing stapled visa to Kashmiris. At the end of the seminar a unanimous resolution was passed condemning the cross border supported violence and damaging democratic institutions of Kashmir. The participants also put their signatures on a memorandum which was UNO. |
