U.S. Consul reiterates her Country’s Commitment to Multiculturalism | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Hyderabad, March 10: “United States is a multicultural country and celebrates its diversity and richness. There might be some instances on which one may show reason to question multiculturalism of United States. However, its commitment to multiculturalism is quite strong and steady”, expressed Katherine Dhanani, US Consul General in Hyderabad . She said this while addressing the inaugural; session of two day National Conference on “ New Directions of Comparative Literature” Prof. Mohammad. Miyan, Vice-Chancellor presided over the session. Dhanani dwelt at length about the experience of multiculturalism in U.S. While referring to the statement made by the German Chancellor that multiculturalism has failed in her country, U.S. Consul General claimed that multiculturalism has strong roots in her own country. However, it seems multiculturalism doesn’t have any place in Pakistan, she remarked, while drawing attention to the recent killing of a federal Muslim of the country. U.S. diplomat expressed her pleasure over her maiden visit to the unique University and complimented the Department. of English for organizing a national conference on an interesting theme. Prof. Mohammad Miyan, in his presidential remarks suggested collaboration between Dept. of English & U.S. Consulate for academic excellence & exchanges. MANUU’s English Department has made progress by leaps and bounds in a short period of time and now it could be compared with any other University’s English Department. He favoured establishing a centre for the advance study of literature. Prof. Afzal Khan, (Dr Babasaheb Marathwara University, Aurangabad) in his keynote address raised many important questions with regard to the theme of the conference. Complaining about the inadequate facilities & expertise available in the country in the field of comparative literature, Prof. Khan remarked that the best talent is going towards Information Technology Engineering & medicine etc. Enrolment in Art & Humanities is slowly dwindling. Do we need to institutionalize the discipline of comparative literature? Do we have any national justification? Is literature the finest form of cultural product? He asked. While recalling the richness of Sufi & Bhakti poetry, he lamented that we have not learnt from our history. We have to retrieve those confluence. To make the past culturally relevant is the essence of comparative literature, he said. Earlier, Dr. Haseebuddin Qadri, HoD welcomed the gathering & Dr. Shugufta Shaheen presented conference Raison d’etre. Prof. Amina Kishore, Dean, School of Languages, Linguistics & Indology delivered the inaugural speech. Dr. Shugufta’s research work titled “Revisiting History” was also released on the occasion.
