J&K Bank to promote sports at grass root level | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, March 10: The premier financial institution of the state, Jammu and Kashmir Bank has recently reconstituted its Sports Board to supplement action oriented and professional approach in its functioning so as to promote sports at grass root level, providing the talented sports persons of the state a launching pad to excel at the national and international level, not only in soccer but also in other sports including cricket. This was disclosed by newly appointed chairman of the Bank’s Sports Board, Tafazal Hussain in an exclusive interview with Sports & Allied News here today. “Not only soccer, we shall also bring cricket in priority list with assistance to other popular games of all the three regions of the state,” said Tafazal Hussain. Re-constituted in December last, the seven-member Board, including chairman, vice-chairman, A H Banday; secretary, Mohd Amin Khan and members, Ghulam Mohammad, Sunil Gupta, Chetan Paljor and Sunil Khajuria, worked hard to point out priorities forfuture. Tafazal Hussain, who is one of the presidents of J&K Bank, disclosed that the Bank has decided to completely professionalize the functioning Sports Board aiming at achieving desired results. “The Board will be made purely a professional institution brining it at par with the corporate culture,” he maintained.
Football talent hunt
Chairman J&K Bank Sports Board stated that the Board has discussed a comprehensive plan to go for a talent hunt in the state to raise a pool of around 100 young boys (between 17-21 years) under the guidance of veteran footballers in the Bank. These talented boys shall be exposed to advanced training and competition so as to come out with a pool of 20 to 30 boys to groom them into professional players in next five years. “We feel, there is no dearth of talent in J&K. Sports in the state has suffered a lot in the past and now time has come to be active in promotion of sports in a more professional way. Though foreigners play a role in our team’s profile but we want to lay more stress on identifying local talent and ensure professional development of the players. We want to make our team a highly reputed national side” maintained the chairman Sports Board.
Cricket team in making
The Board has also discussed possibilities to re-activate Bank’s cricket team by identifying the existing talent with-in the Bank and also to involve outstanding young cricketers of the state to rejuvenate the team very soon. “Though sponsorship policy for domestic competitions continues, still the focus would be on direct involvement in organization of events of national repute. Regarding raising Bank’s own infrastructure he said that a comprehensive scheme shall be drawn by the Board and presented to Chairman of the bank for his consideration,” disclosed Tafazal Hussain.
Performance of football team
State’s only professional football team of J&K Bank has performed well in all the tournaments they have played in the current year. The team has been praised for its performance in the Sher-e-Kashmir Gold Cup and Rajiv Gandhi Football Tournament, held recently at Jammu, where it reached the final of both the tournaments and lifted Sher-e-Kashmir Cup. Bank’s team also lifted All India Kamtee Gold Cup Football trophy held at Nagpur in February 2011.
