EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Mar 10: To overcome shortage of faculty members in Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar especially at senior levels, available posts of Lecturers are immediately referred to Union Public Service Commission for direct recruitment.
This was stated by Minister for Medical Education R.S. Chib in the Legislative Assembly in reply to a Calling Attention Notice of M.Y. Tarigami. Chib said as many as 37 Lecturers have been appointed during the current fiscal in the Government Medical College, Srinagar through PSC adding that higher positions of Assistant Professors and above are filled up as soon as eligible Lecturers/ Assistant Professors and Associate Professors become available.
As a short term measure, Minister said 20 faculty members (1 Professor and 19 Lecturers) have also been engaged on contract basis in the college. Additionally, he said Government has also issued SRO 384 in December 2009 for engaging faculty members under academic arrangement under which retired faculty members can also be engaged upto the age of 65 years.
Chib said that process for engaging faculty members under academic arrangement is already on adding that 165 applications have been received by the Principal, Government Medical College Srinagar in this behalf. Earlier, Tarigami raising the issue pointed out that it was mandatory to have one Professor in each specialty as per MCI norms.
He said that there are only 10 regular professors against 23 specialists in the premier medical college. Out of 504 available posts of consultants only 179 are filled up, he added. He called for adopting MCI norms under which a faculty member is eligible to become a professor after 7 years as against 13 years in vogue in the State presently.
Legislator said that lack of adequate medical faculty could pose a threat of de-recognition of under graduate and post graduate course run by the college. He said that medical colleges in both Srinagar colleges in both Srinagar and Jammu are churning out hundreds of doctors every year.
