JeM Chief, guard killed in Srinagar encounter | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, March 10: The police today achieved a major breakthrough by eliminating one of the most wanted militants Sajad Afghani, chief commander of the Jaish-e-Muhammad outfit. His personal guard also got killed in a brief encounter near Nishat this afternoon. Both Sajad and his guard are Pakistani nationals. According to the police the duo got killed when personnel of the special operations group (SOG) tried to stop the car they were travelling in on the Foreshore Road near Nishat. The police said the militants opened fire when a police party tried to stop the vehicle. The fire, police said, was returned. The encounter that ensued left both the militants dead. Two police constables and a woman, the police said, sustained injuries in the shoot out. However, the identity of the injured was not disclosed. The Police said Sajad had sneaked into Srinagar and was preparing to strike in a big way. The police also claimed recovery of arms and ammunition from the car. ‘Sajad had been active for the last eight years. He had recently masterminded an attack at the residence of SP (superintendent of police) Sopore. He also masterminded militant attacks in Qamarwari area of the city last year and the attacks in Pattan town in which two CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) jawans were killed,’ Inspector General of Police Sahai said while addressing the media. Sajad’s primary areas of activities were Rafiabad, Sopore and Tarzu areas in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the official said, describing the killing as a ‘big success’.
