21 Smugglers arrested under PSA in Shopian in two years

Jammu, Mar 10 : Twenty one notorious forest timber smugglers have been detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir in the last two years, the state legislative council was informed today."During the years 2009-10 and 2010-11, 21 notorious forest timber smugglers have been detained under PSA in Shopian forest division," Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology Mian Altaf said in a written reply to a question of Showkat Hussain Ganai in the House.He further said that 7985 cubic feet of timber has been provided to applicants of Wachi constituency during 2009-10.An amount of Rs 11,78,503 has been realised against the 7985 cft of timber provided by the department to the applicants of the said constituency, he said.

Govt purchases 9,686 Mega Units energy in 2010-11
Jammu, Mar 10 ) The Jammu& Kashmir government has said it purchased 9,686 Mega Units of energy during the current financial year so far, nearly 265 Mega Units more than last year.
9,686.44 Mega Units of energy were purchased from Central Public Sector Units (CPSUs) and J&K state Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC) for the first 11 months of the current fiscal, against 9,421.29 Mega Units purchased during the same period last fiscal, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in a written reply to the question in Legislative Assembly.
Around 300 Mega Watts of additional power were arranged through banking during the winter months on basis of reciprocal arrangements finalised with six states of the country to meet winter shortage of power, Abdullah, who also holds the state''s power portfolio said.
The allocation of un-allocated quota was enhanced by the Union Minister of Power from 101 MW to 308 MW, with effect from November 10, 2010, he said.
Besides this, gas turbine units were operated during winter months in the valley for improving the power position despite prohibitive costs, he said.
