Technocrats clash with police during protest
3/10/2011 11:51:41 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Mar 10: More than hundred technocrats were today arrested while they were protesting and marching towards Civil Secretariat in this winter capital of the state.
Demanding regularization, over hundreds of technocrats this afternoon took out a massive rally from Indira Chowk to march towards Civil Secretariat where already Section 144 CrPC has been imposed. Raising anti-government slogans, the technocrats carrying placards and banners tried to move towards the Secretariat Complex but heavy deployment of police and para-military troops foiled their attempt.
“The protesters were demanding their regularization,” the eyewitnesses added, while saying the strong contingent of police barricaded the Shalamar road leading towards the secretariat and water cannon was placed in the middle of the road to foil their march.
Led by SP (City North) Jatinder Singh Johar and other police officials, the police contingents stopped the agriculture technocrats from proceeding, leading to a scuffle between the two in which, some of the technocrats suffered minor injuries.
“Both the roads in Shalamar were almost blocked in the afternoon around 12.15 pm, when the police and technocrats were clashing with each other,” the eyewitnesses added.
The police personnel gave thrashing to the technocrats who were protesting to press their demands and arrested 303 of them.
“293 agriculture technocrats were detained and sent to the District Police Line in police buses, two leaders Surinder Radotra and Khurshid Ahmed, both the presidents of Jammu and Srinagar regions respectively of All Jammu and Kashmir Agriculture Technocrats Association were arrested and locked in Police Station City, while four leaders were kept at the Police Station Bus Stand,” the general secretary of the Association
