Fierce encounter near Akhnoor; LeT militant, jawan killed

Jammu, Nov 13
One Lashkar-e-Toiba militant and a solider were killed and eight others, including four police and three army personnel, were injured in a fierce gunbattle, which was still going on, in the upper reaches of Sunderbani area of Akhnoor, about 75 kms from here, this afternoon.
The gunbattle commenced, this afternoon, following a combat operation launched by army and Special Operation Group of Jammu and Kashmir police in Mala Bhort forest belt of Sunderbani. The operation was launched after the police received specific inputs about the presence of a group of militants in the area, sources said.
“A local resident Madan Lal informed the police that a group of about six militants forcibly entered in his house and took meals on gun point during the intervening night of November 11 and 12”, a police officer said.
Following the inputs a special team of police and army was rushed to the area, which launched a combat operation, this morning.
When the troops were cordoning of the militants hideout, sources said, they came under heavy fire. “One army jawan was killed and two army and two police personnel received bullet injuries at the initial stage as militants suddenly opened fire on the troops”, sources said.
The fire was returned leading to a fierce gunbattle. The reports reaching here so far revealed that one security forces have managed to gun down one of the militants, while some others were still holding up in the area. One army jawan was also killed and four police and three army personnel beside a civilian received critical injury in the exchange of fire, sources added.
The encounter was still in progress and security forces have cordoned off the entire area so that none of the militants could escape, sources said. (NAK)
