‘Earthquake devastation in Japan, an eye opener for whole world’

Jammu, March 11: Abdul Majid Wani, MLA Doda and the senior leader of Congress Party has expressed grave concern over large scale devastation caused in Japan due to Earthquake of magnitude as high as 8.9 at Reactor scale.
The earthquake and the tsunami have washed away all habitation in cities falling in more than 2100 kilometre area. There are reports of danger to nuclear power plants, fire in oil
refineries, radiation leakage and the existence of whole mankind within affected area is at grave risk. Even the threat of Tsunami is looming over 20 other countries.
“When an earthquake has almost devastated developed country like Japan, our concern should be towards other countries like Philippines, Indonesia and the SAARC countries
which might not have the same resources to face similar or even lesser type of nature’s fury”, said Wani
.Wani, expressing his deepest sympathies with the people of Japan, said that the whole mankind needs to learn lesson from the havoc caused in Japan, due to fury of nature because of major imbalanced and unsustainable development projects disturbing ecological balances all over the world”.
“Most parts of J&K especially the Chenab Valley Region fall, today, under earthquakes-prone-regions. Many severe natural calamities have shocked the backbone of the state; the last examples were the year 2005 earthquake of Tangdhar, Snow Avalanches in Doda during year 2008 and Cloud Bursts in Leh during 2010. The much important Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway and even the Jammu Srinagar National Highway have today falls under danger zone.The cases of land slides and cracks in loose rock areas and
river Chenab banks have increased drastically”, he adds.
Wani further said that we should be well prepared to meet any eventuality, which might arise due to happening of any natural calamity in J&K. The government should constitute a state level Natural Disaster Management Board headed by a senior politician or a
senior IAS officer, with availability of ample funds and a clear cut policy to take preventive measures as well as to provide immediate relief to affected people, in case of any natural calamity.
