The legislators of the Jammu based opposition parties stood up on their seats expressed serious concern over what they alleged of government having put the matter in cold storage which was resulting in loss on many fronts to the people, particularly students of Jammu. Dissatisfied with the reply of the government, the legislators walked out from walked out from the Assembly to lodge protest. It was during the zero hour the leader of the National Panthers Party Harshdev Singh raised the matter who alleged that the state government had failed to make the Central University in Jammu Central functional . He said while as the Central Universities in other parts of the country numbering nearly 15 had since started their work on academic and other related fronts, it was only in Jammu it exists on papers. " It is unfortunate no Vice chancellor has been appointed so far……", Harsh Dev lamented. "It is clear picture of deliberate delay and discrimination…….all other central universities across the country have become functional and Jammu's central university is yet to get off the ground for the mere reason of failure to appoint a vice chancellor", he said. Soon he was joined by the legislators of BJP who supported his call on making the Central University functional as early as possible. Prof Chaman Lal Gupta and Ashok Khajuria vociferously raised the matter and demanded a reply from the government. Members of BJP, NPP and JSM then stood up and shouted slogans. " VC Ko appoint Karo….discrimination Khatam Karo….." When pandemonium prevailed for some time, Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik got up and informed the House that the government too was concerned over the issue and efforts were on to make the University operational. "The VC was almost selected last year. But a controversy was triggered by some vested interests, who created an environment of protests over the issue," he said. "The VC was about to join and now he wants to escape the controversy and has decided to keep away from the post", he said. Malik, however, did not mention the names of either the protesting organizations nor that of Prof Amitabh Mattoo, who had last year been appointed as the VC of Jammu Central University. Malik said the controversy which erupted in the wake of appointment of the Vice Chancellor of the Central University, Jammu, has stalled the institution to take off. " We are speedily taking up the things now with the Union government", he added. He said that Central government has been requested to expedite the appointment of Vice Chancellor so that the institution starts functioning soon.He said land has already been made available for the prestigious institution and other formalities stand completed. Even as the Minister tried to convince the legislators of government keen on making it functional a the earliest, the members of BJP, NPP and lone member of JSM Ashwani Kumar continued sloganeering and staged a walkout. |
