Harsh mocks at claims of govt in health sector

JAMMU, Mar 11: Jammu Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) leader Harsh Dev Singh today mocked at the government for claiming to achieve number one ranking in the health sector among all the states of the country despite several 'loopholes' and 'deficiencies' in the department.
Though the former Education Minister Harsh Dev Singh was a little blunt in criticizing the government, he tried to make peace with the Minister for Health Sham Lal, who had alleged a day earlier that former Education Minister 'indiscriminately' favoured Ram Nagar constituency in upgrading school infrastructure.
While taking part in the discussion on Demands for Grants for the Health and Family Welfare department in the State Legislative Assembly, Harsh Dev began his speech by saying, "Despite Health Minister's allegations inside as well as outside the House that I made unequal distribution of schools during my tenure as Education Minister, I will try to be fair with whatever I am going to say on the floor of the House."
Harsh Dev, however, minced no words in reflecting the 'real face' of the state health sector as he chose the occasion to the fullest to expose certain discrepancies in it and did not forget to convey to the treasury benches that 'All Is Not Well'.
"5641 posts are lying vacant in health department… 1753 health institutions are being run either in rented accommodations or Kaccha Houses…. 351 attachments in health and 76 in Indian System of Medicines but surprisingly still we are ranked number one."
Upping his ante, Harsh Dev further admonished the state government for boasting on the number one ranking in health department as adjudged by a newsmagazine last year.
"Two to three patients could be seen in our hospitals…. There is acute shortage of doctors especially in rural and far flung areas….. People have to walk for 20-25 kms to have a check up or to get a medicine …. Still the state is number one in ranks." JKNPP leader said that if the state is number one in health sector, then why the people of other states come here to get medical advice.
"Our people are going to places like Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar to seek medical opinion but why not the people from other states come here keeping in view that J&K is number one state in heath facilities." Harsh Dev said
He said that the centre had allotted Rs 1200 crore to upgrade the health infrastructure of the state but till date only Rs 400 crore has been spent.
"We spent only Rs 400 crore in the last six years and have to expend remaining Rs 800 crore in one year… Still number one ….Is this the sign of a state being labeled as number one ?" Harsh Dev quipped. —Early Times Report
