As FM I have never issued any liquor license: Rather | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 11 : The Finance Minister AR Rather today agreed that government was able to earn excise revenue only from Jammu region, this year the amount having reached Rs 326 cr in comparison to Rs 300cr previous year. Contending that he was personally not in favour of issuing licenses for the purpose. Responding to the concern of some BJP and Panthers Party MLAs that the license holders were much more in Jammu region and that government was pushing the Jammu province towards this menace by issuing licenses, Finance Minister dismissed the allegation saying government does not issue these in suo moto manner. “ No licenses are issued on our own without applications….”, Rather said adding that the procedural steps too are tough for the same. “ I am personally against liquor consumption…….I favour these should be stopped ……I assure you with sense of responsibility that as Finance Minister I have never issued or facilitated issuing the off licenses “, he asserted. Appreciating the concern of some MLAs, Rather said even though total prohibition was not possible, there was need to launch a widespread campaign against the liquor menace. “ The government can also put in place some restrictions ….but we cannot stop tax realization until the business is on…….”, Rather said. Earlier while the discussion on grants was going on, Speaker MohammadAKbar Lone too intervened to the concern of some members over the issuance of licenses in Jammu and said raising the matter merely in House won’t yield any result instead it needed a campaign against the liquor consumption. Panthers Party MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia vociferously raised the matter and alleged if issuing licenses was not stopped, Jammu known as city of temples would soon be converted into city of liquor consumers.
