JK to bank on drip and sprinkle irrigation: Mir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, March 12: Agriculture Minister, G H Mir today said that the state has to bank on drip and sprinkle irrigation system because of the restrictions imposed by Indus Water treaty on use of state’s waters. Mir said that besides the distance component the Indus Water Treaty had placed certain limitations on the use of river water for irrigation and power generation. To make up for these restrictions and limitations “the Government has decided to provided all possible assistance to he orchardists and the farmers for purchasing and procuring drip and sprinkle irrigation equipment." He said that the Government has decided to give 100 per cent subsidy of VAT component on micro irrigation system which covers drip and sprinkle irrigation process. He aid once drip and sprinkle irrigation system was accepted by farmers and orchardists oa large-scale "we may expect major increase in food and fruit production in the Kandi areas." The Treaty has imposed certain limitations with the result that for full utilization of Chenab, Jehlum and Indus river water for power generation and irrigation vast areas in the state, especially in the hilly areas, had remained without proper irrigation facilities resulting in meager production of food-grains.
