Geelani rules out another agitation | | | ET Report Jammu, Mar 12: Putting all speculations to rest, Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani today made clear that he had no plans of launching another agitation this summer. In a statement issued this evening, he thanked the people for observing strike today "to show their concern over massive arrests across Kashmir in the name of preventing breach of peace." "We do not want to subject people to inconvenience by calling for frequent strikes. But how can the people forget those who have been arrested and persecuted", he said. Responding to DIG's statement, he said: "Machil encounter, killing of Wamiq Farooq, Tufail Matoo and others triggered the agitation last year." Geelani, however, refused to guarantee calm if the killings continued. "When situation takes an ugly turn, the persons at the helm entrust the job of responding to it the police. The police issues political statements and in the process erode the credibility and image of the institution", he said. Strongly refuting the allegation that he was targeting education or the tourist season, the octogenarian leader said he was striving for a better and bright future of the people of Jammu Kashmir. "Those who say I launched the last year's agitation and had plans to disrupt peace again this year are trying to shield the crimes of police and the armed forces. They must bear in mind that they cannot change the ground realities by resorting to lies", he said. Geelani said feeding lies cannot help them in any way. "This will not help them in post retirement rehabilitation", he said. Seeking immediate release of all prisoners, Geelani urged the International community to take note of the "uncalled for, unjustified and unwarranted arrest of innocent people." He said most of the persons arrested or detained under `draconian laws' are not involved in any `subversive' activity. |
