Kashmir demands task force for addressing women issues | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Mar 13: Two-day women’s conference, organised by center’s interlocutors on Jammu and Kashmir, today recommended setting up of a special task force for addressing the problems of women victims of violence in the state. The participants recommended setting up of the special task force comprising eminent women from the state to address the problems of women victims of violence, such as widows, ''half-widows'' and orphans, academician Radha Kumar told reporters at the end of the conference here. In this context, she said, "We welcome the recent offer of the army to help in tracing the boys who have disappeared, and hope it will yield results." On the recommendation of an urgent requirement for trauma counselling centres, she said, "We urge that these be speedily set up." She said that there was a focused discussion of the problems of migrant women, especially Kashmiri pandits. "A valuable suggestion was that women can provide a bridge for Kashmiri pandits to reconcile with their co-citizens in the Valley," she said. Kumar said there was a lively discussion on the political contours of a solution, with divergent aspirations being expressed from the three regions and the different political formations. However, it was heartening to hear the flexibility that women displayed in finding common ground. "This spirit of give and take, respecting the sentiments of all three regions as well as communities, can provide the basis for a permanent resolution," she said. She said the participants were unanimous in their demands that no settlement can be reached without the participation of women. Kumar said they resolved to continue their interaction on a virtual platform to be set up by the group of interlocutors under her supervision. Describing the sixth tour of the team as "different" from the previous visits, she said, "We focused on women, with a two-fold purpose. "First, we had met relatively few women in the past five months, and we felt that these very important voices had been insufficiently heard...secondly, while we have met around 450 delegations, we had not begun a collective round the table discussion on the political contours of a solution." "On Friday, we met the mothers, wives, sisters of the boys who so tragically lost their lives or were injured during the turmoil last year. These terrible losses should never have occurred, and, as one woman emphasized, they should not happen again," she added.
