Sunday market attracts large crowd as life limps back to normal | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Mar 13 : "Sunday Market" in Srinagar, witnessed a large number of crowd today as life returned to normal in the Kashmir valley after a day-long strike. About three-km-long market from Radio Kashmir, Srinagar, crossing to Jehangir Chowk, attracts thousands of people from different parts of the valley since early this morning. The authorities had made proper security arrangements in the entire area to thwart any incident. Hundreds of vendors, mostly educated unemployed youths, selling their products, had set up stalls on both sides of the road. Though the market is set up by vendors selling old clothes, carpets and woollen, but today from a needle to latest electronic equipment are available. Even leading shopkeepers of some main markets are setting up their stalls on Sundays. Jackets, sweaters, jeans of some branded companies are also available in the market. Yesterday, a general strike was observed in the valley, including the summer capital, on a call given by the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) in protest against the alleged large-scale arrests of youth by the police since last summer. A senior police officer denied large-scale arrests and said only 171 people have been detained under the PSA for their involvement in arson, killing of policemen and other activities since last summer. However, 57 were released, he said, adding still 114, including three teenagers, are detained in jails. He said of 114, 54 people are in judicial custody.
