Officials respond to Kumar’s statement on arrests | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu,Mar 14:- The statement of one of the interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir evoked a response from the officials today. The officials said the police had not embarked on large scale arrests of Kashmiri youth to prevent `unrest during summer’. Radha Kumar, who happens to be one of the interlocutors had expressed concern over what she called `large scale arrest of Kashmiri youth.’ Kumar had accused the state government of ignoring the recommendations of the interlocutors. “Our recommendations had borne fruit earlier when a number of youth were released”, she said. According to official sources 1400 youth have been taken into custody for their involvement in the last year’s agitation that paralyzed life in Kashmir for five months. “Only those youth involved in serious cases have been detained”, they said. The officials said that the government honours the recommendations of the interlocutors. “Not more than a dozen youth have been arrested during the past one week”, they said. A police officer said that some of the arrests had been effected only after reports had confirmed that they were trying to kick up subversive violence. He said that the security forces have been firmly told that they should never resort to harassment of innocent people or keep innocent people in custody
