Poisoning dogs ‘unscientific’ will disturb ecological balance | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Mar 14: With increase in number of dog bite cases in Valley and subsequent demands by the people to control dog population, experts have warned any outdated move like poisoning not backed by WHO scientific research or in accord with universal methods like Animal Birth Control (ABC) adopted worldwide could disturb the ecological balance. Javed Iqbal Shah, a columnist and an environmental activist told that animal behavior experts and veterinarians should be involved together with the civil society to deal with the problem as poisoning dogs would not remedy the problem and instead disturb the ecological balance as dogs are natural scavengers and help clean up the environment. “I’m filing a petition against Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation in the Supreme Court, who have failed to adopt Animal Birth Control measures in Kashmir over the past twenty years and are now blaming the animal activists and the dogs for this alarming situation and recently ordered poisoning of dogs. The municipal planners of the state and officialdom for their own vested interests have failed and are now resorting to diversionary tactics to mislead the public. Other states that implemented the ABC have since accomplished negative dog population and zero bite objectives as Kashmir lags far behind.” “Killing of dogs has become a new way of corruption for the officers of SMC. Why have they failed to achieve the results for past forty years if poisoning was the solution? I’ve filed a complaint against Municipal Commissioner and the officials last year with Vigilance Organization wherein I have urged the SVO to probe the Rs one crore spending last year alone by the SMC on dog killings,” he alleged. Iqbal said that sterilization was the only way out to deal with dog menace as is proved by experiences all over the world “Government’s idea to hire the services of ‘pied piper’ is ridiculous. He (pied piper) is demanding whopping Rs 20 crore for his service. I’m not able to understand where he will take the dogs,” he added.
