Govt to promote sheep husbandry, poultry farming | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 15:- The state Government has plans to promote sheep husbandry and poultry farming to lessen import of mutton and poultry birds. According to informed sources, the government has plans to earmark Rs 6 crore as subsidy for 1000 sheep units in private sector. The government, sources said, also intends to exempt import of animals from toll. The government, it may be mentioned, has already exempted import of milk from toll. There is no denying the fact that milk production especially in Jammu region of the state has increased manifold during the past 15 years but the state still depends heavily on mailk imported from neighboring Haryana and Punjab. The state also has toimport cheese, butter, ghee and other milk products. The department of Agriculture has plans to assist farmers engaged in production of fodder. Also, the state Government is engaged with the help of the veterinary scientists of the two universities of Agriculture in the task of improving cattle population especially the milch cattle which was needed for boosting milk production.
