| Auto-rickshaws charge exorbitant fares, dept silent | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
KATRA, March 15:- As hundreds of devotees visit Katra to pay obeisance at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, the auto-owners continue to dupe them by charging exorbitant fares.
Even the localities of Katra and people of surrounding villagers have raised their voice against the exorbitant fare charged by the auto-drivers but the concerned transport department has neither made any effort to indicate the km distances from the main bus-stand to different routes and nor clearly mentioned the actual fares to be paid and upto what distances, as without marking of kms distances and its exact fares, not only the devotees but even locals also often have to indulge in unhealthy arguments with the auto-owners.
Besides there is no check on the licenses of auto-drivers which have put the risk on the life of several passers-by in katra town. People blamed upon the concerned ARTO Reasi department
for remaining laxative on such issues.
When contacted ARTO Reasi Rattan singh, he told that as per official notification, fare for the 1 km is - Rs 12.50 and after every subsequent rise in 1Km, Rs 9.50 is to be paid up in addition. On asking about the non-installation of signboards of km- distances on different routes putting several commuters in trouble, the ARTO passed the buck on PWD.
