Misuse of military uniforms, a major threat in border areas | | | Vaibhavi Chandel EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, March 15: The Uniform, a code which is offered by different departments to differentiate its employees and to maintain the decorum has now become a problem in many fields. The Uniform of the Indian army, a very peculiar uniform with many different patterns on it, is the pride of an army man, but what when it is used by the infiltrators. The Border areas of Poonch and Rajouri, which are the preferred destinations of the infiltrators, are becoming the hub of violence related activities. In the recent past the infiltration related activities have increased in the border towns and this certainly has made the army to think as what is the reason for all this. Even one thing which has come into front is that the infiltrators are making use of the uniforms similar to the army uniforms. This camouflage at times has provided a chance to the infiltrators to give shape to their vested interest. There are many incidences in which the militants in military attire attacked the people. In one such incidence militants in Army uniforms mowed down 25 villagers in Champanan and again they repeated the act in Thakrai and Sarban villages near Kishtwar. Not only this, one Brigadier and seven jawans were killed, and 12 injured when three militants in Army uniforms attacked an army camp in Tanda, about 40km north of Jammu . There are so many such incidences to quote, but still the misuse of the army uniform could not be controlled. Misuse of uniform attire is an area of major concern. This is not only degrading the image of the Army and the Armed Forces in general, but it also is a huge security risk, as anyone can manage to buy a uniform from the market. The credit goes to the shops which are openly selling these uniforms. In Rajouri and Poonch there are many such shops where the army uniforms are being sold. As these are the border areas so the fear of infiltrators is always there. Generally these are the favorite destinations of the infiltrators from Pakistan. Though initiatives were taken to curb the sale of the army uniform in these districts following the complaints of illegal sale and purchase of army uniform by the unauthorized people in Rajouri, but still there are certain unauthorized shops which are selling these uniforms. There lies strict instructions by the District Development Commissioner Rajouri who has restricted the sale of these dresses only to the authorize people. “Though, at times these uniforms are not the exact copy of the uniform being used by Indian army, but for a lay man, who only knows that few stokes of green, and different shades of other related colors in it, is what makes the army uniform, these uniform are the uniforms of the army people. In case of any mishap, for the common man it is the army which will be held responsible”, says Ashraf Zargar, a resident of Poonch. “Being the border areas, Poonch and Rajouri have a large number of army establishments. Army keeps on roaming throughout these border areas regularly to avoid any violence activity. In lieu of this, these uniforms which are sold in the markets could be misused by the infiltrators to invade the establishments,” he adds showing concern over the misuse of such uniforms. Most of the people are concerned over the misuse of the uniforms and suggest that only after imposing strict restriction over the sale, this menace could be curbed. “In the last few years, the number of the infiltration attempts has increased to a considerable number. At times many incidences have come to galore where in the infiltrators intrude by camouflaging them in army uniforms. Infiltration being a very sensitive issue, so it requires prior precautionary measures. There are many shops in Poonch and Rajouri, wherein the cloth which nearly resembles the army uniform is available in shops easily. Even the tailors are available to stitch those so called army uniforms. There is very less difference in the patterns, so a normal man cannot differentiate it. These uniforms are misused by the infiltrators”, Naseer Ahmed, a resident of Rajouri “Many incidences have come into fore where in the infiltrators camouflaged in the clothing similar to the army uniforms have attacked the army camps or the civilians , camouflaged in such uniforms , so the sale of the uniforms which are similar in pattern to the army uniforms should be restricted in the sensitive areas, especially those where the infiltration bids are quite high”, says Abhinav Vishisth, a business men, who really shows concern over this. “Though every now and then, orders are given over the restriction of the sale of such uniforms in the militancy affected area, but even then incidences are reported when the militants misuse the army dress for their heinous motives. Only a strict vigil and a complete ban with only authorized shops that too in military cantonment selling these uniforms can redress the problem to some extent”, he adds
